One event that happens each month is First Friday, which occurs, you guessed it, the first Friday of each month. Right after morning drop off, parents are welcome to join others in the Parent Lounge for coffee, a light breakfast snack, conversation and connection. It's a great opportunity to meet new friends and spend time with old ones too!

Welcome Week provides an important opportunity for our teachers to learn more about your child. The focus is on building a relationship with your family and to learn more about the special gifts with which God has blessed your child.
Parent Information Night is exclusively for parents. Each teacher creates a presentation for their classroom parents to ensure a smooth start to the new school year and to establish a strong partnership between home and school for your child. We’ll have two rotations so that you can get to more than one classroom. Children older than age 2 should not attend classroom sessions with their parents, so that your undivided attention can be given to the teacher and to other parents.
We celebrate the first day of school by welcoming families to come early for photo opportunities and time to connect with friends. Parents can enjoy a light snack and refreshments as students head off to class. Doors open at 8:10 a.m., and students should be in their classrooms by 8:30 a.m. to start the day. After drop-off, parents are invited to the Sanctuary for Opening Chapel to kick off the new school year.
As a school approved under Rule 14 in the state of Nebraska, we are required to conduct health screenings for all elementary-aged students. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteer nurses and medical professionals—many of whom are current parents or parents of alumni—who assist with screenings for vision, hearing, and general health metrics such as height and weight. Rechecks are offered the following month for students who missed the initial screening or require a follow-up.
Grandparent’s Day is a cherished annual tradition held in early September, inviting grandparents and special grandfriends to spend a meaningful morning with our students. The day begins with a short devotion and song in the Sanctuary, followed by classroom visits filled with fun, learning, and shared activities. For students without a grandparent present, caring volunteers are matched as grandfriends to ensure every child enjoys the experience. The day concludes at 11:30 am, and we conduct our normal dismissal process at that time.
School Picture Day at Messiah typically happens in September, with different dates scheduled by grade level. Because pictures are taken over multiple days, siblings may not have the same picture day. Pictures are ordered online, and delivered to the school to be sent home with the students. A retake day is offered later in the fall for any students who are absent or need a new photo.
Fall Break typically occurs after Parent Teacher Conferences in early October at the end of the school week, giving students two days off leading into the weekend.
Each year on Veterans Day, Messiah Lutheran School hosts a special morning event to honor and thank those who have served in our armed forces. Held in the Sanctuary, the celebration includes songs performed by our students and a guest veteran speaker who shares their story of service. It’s a meaningful and heartfelt event that leaves a lasting impact on all who attend.
Thanksgiving break is a 3-day event that starts the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving day to the Friday after. School resumes the following Monday.
Christmas break is typically 2 weeks off in December and January, with Elementary school dismissing early before the start of the break. During the Advent season, our students has select times they participate in worship and families have the opportunity to join us for the special Christmas program.
National Lutheran Schools Week is a special celebration held each year to recognize and give thanks for the ministry of Lutheran schools across the country. At Messiah, we mark the week with fun themed days and special activities. It’s a fun week that highlights our school’s mission to share Christ’s love through education.
The Best Practices Conference is a national event held out of state, typically in February, and provides valuable training, encouragement, and idea-sharing for church and school staff. Select faculty and staff from Messiah attend to gain fresh insights and inspiration for ministry. There is an early dismissal for K-5 students at 11:30 the day prior to the event, and there is no school in session during this conference time.
Quarter Break is a short 2-day pause in the school year in March right after Parent Teacher Conferences. It provides students and staff with a well-deserved day off to rest and recharge before beginning the next quarter.
Show & Share is a fun evening for K–5 students to showcase their work and progress with their families. From artwork and projects to academic activities, families have a special opportunity to celebrate their student’s growth and success.
Easter Break at Messiah provides students and staff time to reflect, and celebrate the joy of Christ’s resurrection. The break typically includes Good Friday and the days surrounding Easter Sunday. There is no school during this time.
Our Color Run is one of our most exciting annual fundraisers! Sponsored by generous supporters, this event happens on our outdoor field. Students are showered in bursts of color during a short run. It’s a well-spent morning with your Messiah family while raising funds that directly support our school.
The Great Plains Literacy Festival is a special event just for our students that celebrates reading and encourages a lifelong love of books. Held right here at Messiah, the festival features engaging author visits and fun literacy-focused activities. While this is a student-only experience, we’re excited to offer our kids this unique opportunity to be inspired and motivated about reading.
The Operetta is a two-night musical play performance at Messiah, where our 5th grade students take the spotlight on stage. The production features acting, singing, and costumes, with musical accompaniment provided by our K–4th grade elementary students. It is a time-honored and cherished tradition, with all our students participating both evenings.
Messiah’s Got Talent is a fun and creative event where K–5 students have the opportunity to showcase their unique talents with the school. From singing, dancing, and comedy to art, sports skills, and more—students can submit a video or perform live. It’s a celebration of the many gifts God has given our students!
The Lutheran Schools of Lincoln (LSL) Track Meet is an exciting annual event for 3rd–5th grade students, held at Concordia University in Seward. Students from area Lutheran schools come together to compete in a variety of track and field events in a fun, encouraging environment.
The Art Walk is a special annual event where our hallways turn into galleries featuring artwork created throughout the school year by our talented K-5 students. Families are invited to tour the hallways on the main and upper level areas, and admire the artistic growth and imagination of their student(s).
At the end of the school year, we take this opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our K-5 students, such as attendance in school and church, along with special recognition to our outgoing 5th grade students.
The Moving Up Ceremony is a beloved end-of-year tradition at Messiah. Held on the last day of school during Closing Chapel in the Sanctuary, this event begins with our 5th graders, who are recognized as they prepare to leave Messiah and begin their next chapter as middle schoolers. One by one, each class then moves from their current seating section to the one reserved for the next grade—symbolizing their “move up.” From Preschool through 5th grade, it’s a meaningful moment of recognition. Bring your tissues—you’re sure to shed a few happy tears as we close the school year together as a family.
